1. Eucalyptus / Gum Trees (Spotted Gum, Tallowwood, Ironbark, Forest Red Gum)
Size: 15–45 metres tall • Growth Rate: Very Fast (1–2 metres per year)
Best planted: Large open spaces, away from houses and power lines.
Maintenance: Regular crown lifting and thinning every 2–4 years. Storm damage is very common.
Common Issues: Large branch drop (especially after rain), surface roots, invasive roots that damage pipes and driveways.
Warning: Many gum trees become hazardous near homes after 15–20 years.
2. Jacaranda (Jacaranda mimosifolia)
Size: 10–15 metres tall • Growth Rate: Fast
Best planted: Open lawns, parks, wide nature strips.
Maintenance: Light pruning after flowering. Remove dead wood regularly.
Common Issues: Brittle branches that snap in wind, surface roots, heavy leaf and flower drop (messy).
3. Poinciana (Delonix regia)
Size: 8–15 metres tall and very wide • Growth Rate: Very Fast
Best planted: Large backyards with plenty of space.
Maintenance: Major pruning every 3–5 years to control size and shape.
Common Issues: Very messy (pods, leaves, flowers), weak wood that breaks easily, aggressive surface roots.
4. Moreton Bay Fig (Ficus macrophylla)
Size: 15–35 metres tall with massive canopy • Growth Rate: Fast
Best planted: Only in very large properties or parks.
Maintenance: Frequent professional pruning required.
Common Issues: Extremely aggressive roots that lift concrete, damage pipes, and foundations. Can drop large branches.
5. Brush Box (Lophostemon confertus)
Size: 10–20 metres tall • Growth Rate: Medium to Fast
Best planted: Street trees, privacy screens, medium gardens.
Maintenance: Crown lifting and thinning every 3–4 years.
Common Issues: Surface roots in poor soil, can become top-heavy if not pruned.
6. Lilly Pilly (Syzygium australe & other species)
Size: 3–12 metres (depends on variety) • Growth Rate: Medium to Fast
Best planted: Hedges, small gardens, feature trees.
Maintenance: Regular clipping for hedges. Watch for psyllid (lerp) attacks.
Common Issues: Leaf-eating insects, can become leggy without pruning.
